Sarawak developer Ibraco Bhd has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Singapore-based Health Management International Pte Ltd (HMI Medical) to develop Regency Hospital Kuching, a 300-bed private specialist hospital in The NorthBank township, Kuching.

The hospital will be fully owned and operated by HMI Medical and is scheduled to open in 2029. It aims to meet rising demand for advanced healthcare services in Sarawak, Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asia region.

To support the project, Ibraco entered into a Share Sale Agreement with Kuching Health Holdings Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of HMI Medical, to sell its entire stake in NorthBank Specialist Hospital Sdn Bhd for RM900,000. Once completed, NorthBank Specialist Hospital will cease to be part of Ibraco and will purchase 4.2 acres of leasehold land from the developer for the hospital’s construction.

Group Managing Director Datuk Chew Chiaw Han said, “We are honoured to play a role in expanding Sarawak’s healthcare sector and contributing to the state’s broader social and economic progress. The establishment of the Regency Hospital Kuching in the township represents more than just a new healthcare facility, it reflects our shared aspiration to create lasting community value through sustainable township development.”

He said handing the project to HMI Medical, a reputable regional healthcare group with hospitals in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam, would strengthen confidence among residents and investors while improving access to quality medical care.

HMI Medical Group Chief Executive Officer Chin Wei Jia said, “With the strong growth of Sarawak, its increasing international connectivity and growing demand for advanced healthcare services, we are excited to establish the Regency Hospital Kuching within the NorthBank township. This project represents HMI Medical’s commitment in caring for the health and well-being of the local community and those living in surrounding states and regions.”

She said the hospital would feature comprehensive specialist and subspecialty care, smart hospital systems, advanced medical technology and internationally benchmarked clinical standards. It is also expected to create over a thousand jobs and offer cross-training opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Senior Surgeon and Board Director of HMI Medical’s hospitals in Malaysia, Dr Richard Chew, said, “As a Sarawakian and long-time board member of HMI Medical’s hospitals, I am proud and deeply passionate about giving back to my community and marking a new chapter for Sarawak by leading the establishment of Regency Hospital Kuching.”

The agreement was formalised during the Sarawak Mega Fair 2025 at the Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre in Singapore and witnessed by Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
